[Dev Blog] Talesweeper: Initial Character Designs

Hello everyone. My name is Thierry Christian and I'm the Company Director of Platonic Dreams. Talesweeper is actually Project #3, that I started during university, so I created several character designs for the first batch of core characters that would be featured at different points in the game.

Protagonist: ARCH-Red Riding Hood

The main character of this series. I didn't really try to reinvent the wheel when designing this character, as the goal was for her to be as 'quintessential' and 'identifiable' as possible. Naturally, being a Red Riding Hood character, she has a red cloak, but since I was aiming for a more mature, violent game I wanted to avoid making her look too young (as she has a mixed bag of representations across media).

Admittedly, I am more used to drawing male characters (for Project #1), so I did struggle a bit in earlier versions, until I achieved a look that I was happy with. Luckily, Clip Studio Paint came in clutch with their mannequins, so I got there in the end.

Extra considerations:

Accessory-wise, she has a few small bits, like the long tie and heart motif, that were added as a contrast to one of the other main characters "Alice", who similarly has a short bow-tie and a combination of accompanying items and clothing pieces. Plus, since she has short hair and small ears, Alice has long hair and long ears - you probably get the point by now.

Additional features, like the ears and tail(s), are pivotal to the story and gameplay. Since she is considered quite a "low-level" story in the grand scheme of the world, I had to make sure that she was a bit ordinary by comparison, but not completely devoid of unique qualities.

Deuteragonist: Orion

This is the secondary character and "partner" of ARCH-Red Riding Hood. Orion is an original character that I came up with for this game, to act as both a companion to, and backup for A-RRH.

Originally, I had a more flat look for this character, to make them look like had become dimensionally (i.e. spatially) 2D, but then I thought that it would be difficult to convey them attacking enemies, so I gave them more a head.

Naturally, as A-RRH's host, he shares the same kind of eyes as her.

Antagonist: The Proto-Wolf

The main antagonist of this title is The Proto Wolf. Honestly, I am very pleased with how this character design turned out. The aim was to make a wolf that looked intimidating and powerful, but also represented the Red Riding Hood story, so that it didn't just look like some random forest wolf.

The result of that ended up being this hulking demon of a wolf. The colour scheme was kept simple, because it didn't really need to be too over the top - the red pops out against the rest of the body and when I drew designs with this character, the eyes and cloak always stood out the most.

I was also glad that I could maintain a bit of consistency between A-RRH and TPW, since they both originate from the same story - it's like looking into a mirror and seeing your antithesis.

In addition to the main characters of the story, I designed some additional characters for my first prototype, as well as one of the core characters for later in the game.

Alice

Alice was designed to be one of the core rivals to ARCH-Red Riding Hood, so (as previously mentioned), she has a few design choices that make her contrast A-RRH.

Since she is much more 'unique' than A-RRH, she can
